Noh Masks in Aoi no Ue

Fukai 深井

Fukai 深井

The Fukai mask shows a mature woman filled with deep, restrained emotion. The slightly lowered eyes and calm sadness suggest quiet dignity and the sorrow of experience.

Ko-omote 小面

Ko-omote 小面

This mask represents a young woman—pure, gentle, and graceful. Its soft smile and smooth features express innocence and quiet beauty, often used for youthful female characters or spirits of memory.

Hannya 般若

Hannya 般若

The Hannya mask embodies jealousy and rage, with horns, sharp teeth, and fierce eyes. It represents a woman whose intense emotion has turned into a vengeful spirit, yet still carries traces of human pain.
